Newcastle United have made a late £4million move to try and hijack starlet Lucien Agoume’s move to Inter Milan, according to Football Insider.

The outlet claims that the Magpies swooped in with an eleventh hour offer to try and persuade the Sochaux youngster to pull the plug on a San Siro switch.

However, it appears that the 17-year-old has his heart set on a move to Antonio Conte’s side, ensuring that Newcastle’s bid has failed to have the desired impact.

European giants Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig are all said to have kept tabs on the player, who has been compared to Manchester United star Paul Pogba for his power and athleticism.

OPINION

This is an interesting one, but you have to doubt the truth of any transfer-related story coming out of Newcastle these days. There is so much uncertainty at the club, to the extent that no one knows who the owner or manager will be come next season, that they surely can’t proceed with any substantial transfer business. That makes it very unlikely that they actually did make a £4million move for Agoume – especially when he alway seemed destined to join Inter. Did Newcastle really think they would be able to persuade him not to join the Italian giants? Surely that was never going to happen. It’s a shame, though, because Agoume sounds like a terrific young prospect. Say what you want about Pogba, but any player with his kind of power and athleticism is likely to be a wonderful prospect. Given the fact that Barca, PSG and Leipzig have all taken a look at him, you can bet this Agoume is pretty good. Unfortunately, though, it appears he is heading to Milan.
