Newcastle United are keen on signing Bristol City defender Adam Webster, according to the Mirror.

The 24-year-old signed from the Robins from Ipswich Town for £3.5 million last summer, and is already attracting attention from the top flight.

The 6’2″ colossus [Transfermarkt] made 47 appearances for City in all competitions last season, and is understood to be a target for Burnley, Watford, and Southampton as well as the Toon Army.

OPINION

This would be a smart bit of business from Newcastle, if they can pull it off. In an ideal world, the club would be making moves for big continental stars and established internationals, but with the way things are at the club at the moment, signing big talents from the second tier is not a bad policy. Webster is a real player, who could easily make the step up to the big time, but would cost a fraction of the cost of a more recognised name. The competition to land him would be fierce, but if the Toon Army can see off the chasing pack and land their man, this could be a brilliant piece of relatively thrifty business. Until the long term future of the club is decided one way or another, this is exactly the type of deal that the Magpies should be aiming to tie up this summer.
