It’s fair to say that Joselu hasn’t quite lived up to the billing on Tyneside. Since signing from Stoke City in 2017, the Spaniard has hit just seven goals in 52 appearances for Newcastle United, and is widely regarded as one of the weakest links in Rafa Benitez’s squad. In fairness, that relatively barren spell is predominantly just a continuation of his poor form for the Potters, and it’s hardly surprising that he hasn’t suddenly morphed into a world beater on Tyneside. There will be few fans who miss him, therefore, if and when he finally completes his heavily anticipated move to Alaves in his home country. According to Mundo Deportivo, that deal is all but done, and it is only a matter of time before there is some kind of confirmation that the forward is heading back to Spain. That would be wonderful news for United. Joselu is a grafter, there’s no denying that, and he deserves some credit for his work rate, but that aside, he has shown pretty much nothing to suggest that he is the right man to lead the line for an English top flight side. As such, getting him off the wage bill will be a small masterstroke that could be the key to bringing in a more able replacement.
