Dutch football expert Marcel van der Kraan told Sky Sports recently that Newcastle United are one of a number of Premier League teams who have been scouting Ajax central midfielder Donny van de Beek. It will come as no surprise to anyone that this link has been met with something resembling derision from the Toon Army. The fans on Tyneside are as switched on as they come, so they realised instantly that the club’s chances of signing a player like Van de Beek are essentially null and void. Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Liverpool were among the other top flight teams mentioned in connection to the Dutch international – so how is he ever going to end up at St James’ Park? The team may well have scouted the 22-year-old at some point, but that doesn’t mean that they have any chance of signing him. He’s headed right to the top of the game and will likely cost around £50-£75million. Newcastle don’t spend that sort of money, do they? Come on now, let’s be real.
