Mick Martin has delivered his verdict on the ongoing contract talks with Rafael Benitez, revealing he would be shocked should the Spaniard leave Newcastle.

The former Newcastle captain claimed it would be a massive risk for the Magpies to not secure Benitez to a new deal, claiming that the former Liverpool boss isn’t asking for much at what could be an extra £15million in transfer fees.

Speaking to the Chronicle, Martin said: “I also think it would be a massive gamble for Mike Ashley to start the season without Benitez – especially for an extra £10million or £15million. I hope the pair can resolve things soon.”

“What Benitez is asking for is fair. He wants an extra few quid to try to take the club on to the next level. He’s sick of fighting and scrapping against relegation.”

Benitez’ current contract runs out at the end of June, with the Times reporting that the Magpies boss has the chance to double his annual salary to £12million with an offer on the table from Dalian Yifang.

It has been suggested by the Sun that Ashley has made his final offer to Benitez, in a deal reported to now be non-negotiable.

OPINION

Mick Martin is right to cast doubt over the future of Benitez, with the Spaniard only having 10 days to agree to a new deal at St James’ Park. The reported offer on the table from China will no doubt tempt the Spaniard who could ridiculously double his money with that contract. Mike Ashley is making things difficult, which should not be the case with his stake in the club expected to be bought out. Ashley should sensibly negotiate with Benitez, and discuss what he wants – with reports suggesting all that Benitez wants is a change to the current transfer policy at the club. Either way, there is no way of winning for Ashley who would be cast as an even bigger villain in the North East should he allow Benitez to walk away. The former Liverpool boss showed his loyalty when sticking with the club knowing they would be relegated, and then winning the Championship and earning promotion in his first attempt. Not only that, Benitez has transformed Newcastle into a side capable of challenging for the top-half next season, with all that is needed to do so a slight increase in their transfer budget.
