OPINION

Rafael Benitez has quickly become a hero at Newcastle United in his three years in charge at St James’ Park. That recognition is fully deserved as the Spaniard has overseen a side that was destined for relegation, and then guided them to promotion in his first attempt from the Championship. On top of that, the Champions League winner has since transformed the Magpies into a side that is more than capable of challenging for the top half of the Premier League next season. Benitez will only be able to do that if his future is secured, with his current deal expiring at the end of June. A new deal has yet to be agreed and Newcastle are facing the daunting task of going into next season without Benitez at the helm. Doubts became even stronger on Tuesday when the Times reported that Benitez had been offered an annual wage of £12million to take over at Chinese club Dalian Yifang. Many Newcastle fans were quick to confidently rubbish the rumours linking their manager with a move to China this summer, with one fan saying: “He won’t go to China. This is definitely not a concern.”
