Premier League heavyweights Manchester United are preparing to make an opening bid for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff this week, according to Football Insider.

The outlet claims that the Red Devils have made the 21-year-old one of their primary transfer targets this summer and will offer £18million for him.

Ole Gunnar Solskajer is looking to take advantage of the confusion at St James’ Park over the future of both the current owner and manager.

United are looking to include performance-related add-ons into their offer for Longstaff.

OPINION

This is the news that Newcastle’s supporters will have been dreading, although it’s not actually as bad as it first looked. £18million for Longstaff is an absolute joke of an offer. Yes, he’s only played a handful of Premier League games, but he is a tremendous prospect who has emerged as one of the finest young central midfielders in the top flight. And for that United are only going to bid £18million? Come on now. Longstaff is worth so much more than that. Yes, there will be performance-related add-ons included in the deal, but that’s no good for the Magpies’ spending power right now. They will want a huge fee for Longstaff if they were to sell him, which they surely have no intention of doing. The most worrying thing about this is that United have made the Englishman one of their primary transfer targets – that suggests that they will make a second bid if this opening one is rejected, as expected.
