Manchester United expect to have a “free run” at Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff this summer, according to Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst.

The 22-year-old is understood to be a target for the Reds during the current transfer window, as reported by Sky Sports, and Luckhurst has suggested that the north west side are keen on him partially due to a lack of competition.

Writing on his personal Twitter, he said: “Told United are actively looking at players they won’t be ‘outbid’ for.

“Only competition they had for Daniel James was from Brighton and they could have a free run at Longstaff.”

OPINION

There are two ways to look at this one, to be fair. On the one hand, the fact that there is any interest at all, especially from a side as wealthy as United, will be a worry for supporters. On the other, the fact that United are only willing to go in for players they won’t be outbid for is hardly a ringing endorsement of their confidence in getting deals over the line this summer, and if Newcastle can ward of their advances, you would expect Longstaff to still be a Toon player come the start of the new season. That would be fantastic news. Rarely has a homegrown youngster created such a buzz on Tyneside, and it’s easy to foresee why the club believe that they can build a side around him for years to come. Longstaff is a future captain if he stays at the club, and getting through this summer would be a major first step in ensuring his long term future at St. James’ Park.
