Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has revealed when he wants to return to action after suffering a season-ending injury.

Longstaff picked up the injury in March against West Ham after forcing his way into Rafael Benitez’ plans. The 20-year-old made his senior debut in January and quickly became a mainstay at St James’ Park.

The young Magpies’ enforcer could play a huge part in next season should Benitez stay at the club, and a big effort in pre-season could see him become one of the first names on the teamsheets.

Speaking to Newcastle’s official club website, Longstaff replied to the suggestion of pre-season by saying: “There’s no specific time on it; as much as it was a bad time to get injured, it’s maybe been a good time as well because you get the whole summer to recover.”

After making his debut, Longstaff quickly proved his worth and was a pivotal part of Newcastle’s defensive efforts in the second half of the season.

Longstaff averaged nearly two tackles-per-game (1.9) and made 0.4 blocks in every outing [WhoScored] – the most by a midfielder at the club during the last campaign.

It would be huge for Newcastle should Longstaff get the chance of a full pre-season at the club next season, with the 20-year-old having the chance to earn integral status once again at St James’ Park.

Manchester United have reportedly been linked with a £25million move for the young midfield enforcer, who must be kept at the club at all costs, with the chance to become a hero in the coming years.
