There’s a chance Rafa Benitez could stay at Newcastle United beyond his current contract without signing a new deal, according to the Northern Echo.

The regional newspaper claim that Benitez could continue on as Magpies manager without signing a new contract as he could effectively start to manage the club on a week-by-week basis.

However the Northern Echo add that neither party wants that scenario to unfold even though Benitez’s stand-off with the Magpies over a new contract shows no signs of being resolved.

OPINION

Imagine a Premier League club only employing a manager on a week-to-week basis, it just screams chaos. While Newcastle fans are likely desperate for Benitez to stay at St James Park beyond his current deal, which expires June 30th, even they wouldn’t like a week-to-week scenario to unfold. One bad result or one disagreement behind the scenes, and Benitez could simply pack his bags and leave whenever he wanted. Benitez is a true professional, so it’s hard to imagine him doing that, but working on a week-to-week basis would give him that option. Everyone knows that success comes as a result of stability and if Benitez was kept on without a deal being signed, it’s hard to see the Magpies being successful as a result. The only reason why Benitez and the club may agree to work together on a week-to-week is basis, is if the mooted Newcastle takeover is guaranteed to go through shortly, so both parties know the scenario is only temporary. However given how it’s hard to predict if or when a takeover will occur, that doesn’t seem like a risk Benitez would take.
