Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has been told to find a new club this summer as the Magpies look to get him off the books, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim on their website that the 33-year-old Republic of Ireland international, who is among the club’s longest-serving players since joining from Charlton Athletic back in 2011, has been ordered to find a move away from St James’ Park.

Elliot appeared in a match day squad just once during the 2018/19 campaign, acting as a substitute for the League Cup clash versus Nottingham Forest and the last of his 68 appearances for the club came in a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City back in December 2017.

Opinion

This should come as little surprise to both player and the fans at St James’ Park. Elliot has quite clearly fallen to the very bottom of the pecking order under Rafael Benitez with Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman all ahead of him and at 33-years-old, he needs to be playing. His time on Tyneside has not been one of much playing time at all but he has always come across as a dedicated professional and someone who is popular among the dressing room. Now is absolutely the right time to leave and when he does his wages can be spent elsewhere in the squad. It is quite an unceremonious end to one of the Magpies’ longest serving players but that is the way football goes. There are not an awful lot of memories that he will leave behind at St James’ Park and perhaps this was a case of what might have been. Still, he earned four caps for the Republic of Ireland and if serious injury had not have struck, maybe it would have been more.
