Journalist Luke Edwards has claimed that Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has been sending mixed messages about his future for two years.

The Daily Telegraph’s north east football correspondent was commenting on the latest comments the Magpies boss has been making, while he also delivered his verdict on the Bin Zayed’s Group’s mooted takeover of the club.

“Mixed messages from Rafa on this contract? He’s been giving mixed messages for the last two years,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account on Sunday.

“I’d say this is just Rafa being Rafa. As for the Bin Zayed Group. Lots of noise, not much action. Tiresome doesn’t do it justice.”

OPINION

This seems pretty spot on from Edwards, in all honesty. Benitez isn’t the most transparent of guys, we all know that. He likes to keep things close to the vest and doesn’t like commenting on rumours. However, when he does speak he sometimes says one thing and then contradicts it the next week. That seems to be the case in regards to his Newcastle future at the moment. The fans want him to stay, and it’s thought that he wanted to remain where he is as well, but now we simply don’t know. Edwards’ verdict on the Bin Zayed Group probably sums up how a lot of Magpies supporters feel at this moment in time. There seems to be a lot of noise emanating from the Middle East, but very few tangible moves seeming to be made. Obviously a lot of us are simply in the dark, but you’d think that Edwards is probably on the pulse. So for him to say there’s not been much action is concerning for those fans wishing for a takeover to be completed.
