Sean Longstaff is the Newcastle United player who the supporters most want to keep at the club long term, and so the Manchester United speculation which has engulfed him this summer will have been extremely concerning for them.

The Daily Mirror reported on Friday that the Red Devils are closing in on a £25million move for the 21-year-old, who has only played a handful of games for the Magpies.

However, there was some good news for the Newcastle faithful this week when Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie revealed on his personal Twitter account that the club have received no contact from United for Longstaff.

Geordies everywhere will surely be breathing a big sigh of relief at that update. The Englishman is absolutely key to the future of Rafael Benitez’s side; a stunning young talent who took to the Premier League like a duck to water when he got his chance around the turn of the year.

You can see why an upper echelon team like United would want to bring him in, but if the Magpies are going to progress at all in the years to come then they need to retain their best players, and Longstaff very much falls under that description.

In essence, £25million wouldn’t get you a hair on Longstaff’s head in this day and age. The prices that have been mooted for players worse than the Newcastle man this summer gives you an indication of what a colossal fee Longstaff would command.

However, it turns out that there is yet to be an official approach from the Manchester giants. That’s phenomeal news for the Newcastle faithful, there’s no doubt about that.
