Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback has no future at the club under current manager Rafael Benitez, according to the Shields Gazette.

The newspaper claims that the 29-year-old, who has made a total of 102 appearances for the club, will be allowed to leave this summer if Benitez stays on as boss.

He is coming off back-to-back loan spells with Championship side Nottingham Forest, who would appear to be his most likely destination were he to leave.

However, he still has one year remaining on his current Magpies contract, and the possibility remains that a new manager could look to include him in the future.

OPINION

The big key here is whether Benitez is staying on or not. Colback seems to have been consigned to the history books by almost everyone connected with Newcastle United, but he remains a Magpies player and could continue to be so for the foreseeable future if Benitez leaves, a new boss comes in and he blows said manager away. That’s not outside the realms of possibility. He’s done really well at Forest, even if he’s been playing at a level below the Premier League. Obviously he’s a talented boy, that’s why the club signed him in the first place. However, you’ve got to trust in Benitez’s judgement at this stage. He wants Colback out and he’s been a pretty savvy judge of players over the course of his career. Ultimately the fans want the Spaniard to remain in charge and, if that happens, it’s hard to see Colback remaining a Newcastle player far beyond this summer.
