Benitez willing to listen to offers amid Newcastle uncertainty

OPINION

To say that nerves on Tyneside are on edge would be something of an understatement, with plenty of uncertainty surrounding Newcastle United ahead of the summer.

With rumours of a takeover circling and Rafael Benitez’s future up in the air ahead of the end of his contract ahead of July, there is a lot for the Toon Army to be concerned about.

The latest reports on their manager will not help their worries one bit.

The Sun claim on their website that amid interest from China, Benitez is willing to listen to offers from other clubs over a potential management move – news which will surely have those in the boardroom, as well as the fans, feeling awfully panicked.

Benitez has always seemed committed to securing a future at St James’ Park but with less than a fornight until his current deal comes to an end, it appears as though that unwavering commitment is starting to falter.

The Spaniard has been lauded for his ability to get the best out of a squad who have overperformed during their return to the Premier League and rightly so – his tactical nous and managerial qualities making him Newcastle’s most valuable asset.

To lose him would be a catastrophe for the Magpies and now that he is willing to other clubs making offers, Newcastle’s chances of keeping him on board might well have gone.

Alarm bells have got to be ringing at St James’ Park and if there was ever a time for urgency, it is the here and now.
