Benitez deal is not close

There is still “a distance” between Rafa Benitez and Newcastle United as the expiration of the Spaniard’s current deal at St. James’ Park continues to loom large, according to Press Association journalist Damian Spellman.

The Toon manager is out of contract on June 30th, but as yet has not agreed to terms on a deal to extend his stay at St. James’ Park.

And Spellman is of the belief that there is still some way to go before an agreement is reached.

As quoted in the Chronicle (15.24), he said: “Newcastle United remain in a state of limbo with manager Rafa Benitez’s contract running down fast and little sign of an imminent breakthrough in takeover talks.

“The Spaniard’s existing deal is due to expire on June 30 and while there is a new offer on the table, Press Association Sport understands there is still a distance between the two parties.”

OPINION

This is potentially disastrous for the Magpies if it is true. Benitez has been just about the only good thing at the club for some time now, and if he were to go, you would have to worry about where it would leave United. Not only would they be losing a world class manager, but there is every chance that his departure could  spark something of a mini-exodus on Tyneside. He is the draw that has brought this squad together, and without him, and with the inevitable pessimism that would follow his exit, it’s hard to see why players would want to stick around. There is still time for the club to sort out this mess and ensure his long term future, but that deadline is looming, and as the days pass by and the deadlock continues, fans must be getting evermore nervous. This could be a make or break fortnight in the north east.
