Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has launched a fierce attack on his former club for their lack of communication this summer.

There have been rumours of a potential takeover at St James’ Park, while manager Rafael Benitez is now in the final week of his contract with no deal close to being agreed for him to stay on.

Shearer isn’t impressed: “WHAT the hell is going on at Newcastle United Football Club?,” he wrote in his column for The Sun. “It looks complete and utter chaos and the lack of communication from the club is embarrassingly bad.

“Their world-class manager can walk away in a week’s time for nothing. But the only thing official we have heard from the club this summer is, ‘We are putting season ticket prices up five per cent’ and ‘This is our new home kit’.

“Nothing surprises me at Newcastle any more. But for the club to stay silent and seemingly let someone as talented and as special as Benitez leave for free, it really is a terrible situation.”

OPINION

Shearer, as he is wont to do, has summed up the mood of the entire Newcastle fanbase. The situation at St James’ Park is dire in the extreme, with one of the best managers in the world seemingly on the verge of leaving the club for free in a week’s time. Benitez clearly isn’t happy with the contract offer presented to him, while the Magpies hierarchy appear to be unwilling to compromise on their business model. As Shearer says, the worst thing is the lack of communication from the club itself. They haven’t commented on the manager or the takeover, leaving supporters entirely in the dark about the future of their football club. The two most powerful positions at the club are the owner and the manager, and nobody knows who they are going to be moving forward. It’s absolutely farcical and it must be devastating for the Magpies faithful. Clearly Shearer is hurting, you can see that in his words here, but there’s little that he or anyone else can do to change the situation.
