Newcastle United have put agent talks over new contracts on hold which has resulted in frustrations behind the scenes, according to Lee Ryder.

The Chronicle reporter, writing on the newspaper’s live blog (20/06, 13:24), claims that things have come to a standstill at St James’ Park as the club undergo a period of uncertainty amid a potential takeover.

It is stated that agents of a number of Newcastle players were in touch with the club over getting their clients new deals but that they are currently on ice, resulting in some angst from the squad and their representatives.

Unfortunately for Newcastle and their fans, this whole takeover saga has resulted in everything else coming to a halt. Of course the players’ contracts are not the biggest concern for the Toon Army, with their manager facing an uncertain final 10 days of his deal. If Rafael Benitez does not pen a new contract and does end up leaving, you will have to wonder how many of the squad who were looking for new terms themselves will want to commit their long term futures at St James’ Park. Benitez is a massive draw for the Magpies and a lot of those players will feel as though their own futures are tied to the manager’s. If he goes, you can imagine that a number of the squad will be looking elsewhere for a potential move rather than remaining at Newcastle. After all, who wants to spend their career at a club which has been plunged into total uncertainty in recent weeks.
