Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman’s first team breakthrough has been long overdue now, and it must be expedited next seasonĀ if number two Karl Darlow moves on this summer.

The Chronicle reported recently that Scottish champions Celtic are interested in Darlow, in a move that would make a lot of sense for all parties. However, if the former Nottingham Forest man does move north then Woodman needs to be promoted.

The 22-year-old is a terrific talent who has represented England at a number of youth levels. Magpies boss Rafael Benitez has seemed hesitant to blood the academy product during his time at the club, though.

But if Darlow goes then Woodman needs to be installed as the undisputed number two at the club, and must be given a chance to push first choice Martin Dubravka from now on. Benitez needs to place the youngster front and centre over pre season and give him the chance to earn his shot.

This isn’t any old academy product, Woodman has appeared to be groomed for years to one day take over the number one shirt at Newcastle.

So with Darlow potentially set to be removed from his path, the young shot-stopper is there ready and willing to make the step up – he’s certainly good enough to do so.

Obviously Darlow’s Celtic move isn’t a done deal by any means, they are only interested after all, but he would appear to be a likely candidate to depart the Magpies’ goalkeeping ranks this summer.

If that proves to be correct then it could be the making of Woodman. He’s waited a long time for his opportunity and now Benitez must give him his chance to impress over pre season.
