Wolverhampton Wanderers are confident that the lure of European football will be enough to beat Newcastle United to West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, who secured Europa League football with their seventh place Premier League finish, are ready and willing to exercise the £16.5million release clause in the Venezuelan’s Baggies contract.

The midlands outfit are looking to sell having failed to secure promotion back to the top flight, and Nuno wants Rondon to come in as competition for first choice number nine Raul Jimenez.

However, Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is also keen to sign the 29-year-old after he scooped Newcastle’s Player of the Season award following a stunning campaign on loan at St James’ Park this term.

OPINION

Wolves’ interest in Rondon has been a major blow to Newcastle’s chances of re-signing a player who was simply tremendous for them this season. However, the Magpies had to expect that they would face some competition for Rondon after he did so well for them. Plus, it’s not like everyone at the club is in agreement that he needs to be signed permanently. There are some serious reservations at board level which have held this whole process up. Now, Wolves are looking to capitalise on Newcastle’s hesitation. They see Rondon as the ideal frontman to come in and compete with Jimenez next time round, when they will be attempting to juggle European and domestic football. It makes sense for them to look at Rondon as someone who can come in and give them some strength in depth up front. The lure of European football is real for any player, and Newcastle certainly don’t possess it at the moment. Will it be enough to override the Venezuelan’s desire to remain on Tyneside? Only time will tell.
