OPINION

Newcastle United have recently valued Dwight Gayle at £20million following reported interest from Fulham, according to the Evening Standard.

The 28-year old has scored 24 goals throughout his loan spell with West Brom this season in all competitions, and is looking to be one of the players who will be on their way out from St. James’ Park next season.

Although Gayle may have shown Newcastle a glimpse of what they have been missing this season whilst being on loan in the Championship, he has also allowed for the Magpies to increase his transfer value going into the summer window.

Newcastle would surely be in dreamland if they were to receive £20million for a player who would likely not even be going to a Premier League club in the summer, and is surely nearing the end of his prime at the age of 28.

The top scorer in the Championship last season was Teemu Pukki of Norwich City, who came as a free transfer (Source: Transfermrkt), which certainly puts into perspective how impressive it would be if the Magpies were able to get £20million for Gayle as Championship clubs know there are bargains to be had.

It seems likely now that Gayle will be playing his football elsewhere next season, and if an offer matching the asking price for the striker comes to fruition, Newcastle should gladly accept and use the funds to bring a replacement striker in before the new season commences.

Fulham seem like the leading candidates for Gayle’s signature, with it looking increasingly more likely that Aleksandar Mitrovic is on his way out of Craven Cottage, and they could be the side willing to pay the £20million that Newcastle are asking for.

Although the asking price may not seem to unrealistic in terms of today’s transfer market, £20million for a Championship-standard striker would be a brilliant deal on Newcastle’s behalf and the Magpies could play a blinder to get that much out of Fulham as a result.
