Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka indirectly thanked manager Rafa Benitez after an impressive end to the Premier League season.

The 30-year old had been linked with a move away from St. James’ Park in January with Juventus reportedly showing interest, according to Calciomercato, but it seems Dubravka is very happy at Newcastle.

The Magpies shot-stopper shared that he appreciated playing a lot of games for the club in the 2018/19 season and was hoping his side would be aiming to improve in the 2019/20 campaign.

Speaking to the Chronicle, Dubravka said: “I am very happy that I have played in most of the games.

“I really appreciate it.

“Obviously I came to England as an unknown player and I’m trying to build my reputation here.

“Let’s just go into next season and get as many points as possible.”

OPINION

Dubravka has been impressive towards the back end of this season in the Premier League, after a shaky start to life on Tyneside, and is looking to continue his form into the new season for the Magpies. The 30-year old has managed eleven clean sheets this season, and although he has previously been linked with a move away from England to the Serie A, fans will no doubt be happy to hear that the Slovakian is looking increasingly likely to stay at Newcastle. It would make sense for Dubravka to stay, especially considering he is now the top dog in between the stick at St. James’ Park, and surely the first name on the team sheet on a match day for Benitez. If he can keep up his rich vain of form from the back end of this season, and take it into next year then he really has nothing to worry about, and will have no problems in further cementing his place in Newcastle’s starting eleven next season.
