OPINION

Danny Mills has made the suggestion that Newcastle United could be a good destination for Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku.

The pundit stated that he believed St. James’ Park could be a good destination for the Belgian should he be leaving the Manchester club anytime soon.

“Maybe Newcastle, maybe that could be a direction that he could possibly go in.” said Mills on talkSPORT (16:21, Thursday May 23rd).

Realistically, the chances of Newcastle signing Lukaku are extremely slim, and there are lots of contributing factors which would stand in the way of the 26-year old making the switch to Tyneside.

It seems unlikely that Mike Ashley, the owner of Newcastle United, would be willing to pay Lukaku’s wage, which stand at a staggering £180,000-per week. (Source: Spotrac)

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez would also have a seriously tough job in convincing the Belgian into a summer move to St. James’ Park, and it seems unlikely that Lukaku would be happy with move to a club not currently competing in a European competition.

The forward has only managed 15 goals in 45 appearances in all competition for Manchester United this season, and it wouldn’t be too surprising if he were to be pushed out of the doors and sold in the summer, after being less than impressive at Old Trafford this season.

It could be that Newcastle is the right level for Lukaku, however trying to convince him into a move to St. James’ Park would be another task in itself.

This is without even mentioning that United would no doubt be looking to get some of the £75m (Source: BBC Sport) back in which they paid for Lukaku back in 2017, and it seems unlikely that Newcastle would be able to pay anything close to this amount for a player in the summer.

So when you consider all that, Mills is surely in dreamland to think Lukaku could soon rock up at St James Park.
