Solano: Rafa wants answers

Nobby Solano has suggested that Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez will be looking to find out how much money he has at his disposal before agreeing to a new deal on Tyneside.

The Spaniard is currently in discussions over his future with the Magpies, and Toon favourite Solano is fairly adamant on what the manager will be looking for.

Speaking to the Chronicle, he said: “I believe Rafa will want to know how ambitious they are and how much investment Mike Ashley is prepared to make.

“The transfer window is open. The talks really should have taken place before now and this should have been done.

“Things have been made hard for Rafa. Without it nothing can move on. Rafa is waiting for the answers.”

OPINION

Nothing too revelatory from Solano here, but in some ways, that makes things all the more frustrating for Newcastle fans. If the complications surrounding negotiations were multifaceted or complex, then you could understand why it might take a while to detangle them and find a solution. As it is, the answer appears to be an altogether simpler one. Give Benitez some backing and watch the team soar. Instead, what we seem to be seeing is a lot of hesitation and reservations from the board. That is worrying on more than one level. In the first instance, if they dilly dally too long they risk losing the best manager they have had in years. Looking beyond that, however, if they are not willing to back Benitez then they are not willing to back anybody, presumably. If that is the case then the Magpies face a long, arduous road ahead, and one that will leave many supporters absolutely furious.
