Sky pundit Laura Woods has revealed that she tried to get an answer out of Rafa Benitez over his future at Newcastle United on Sunday, but the Spaniard refused to give anything away.

Benitez’s contract at St. James’ Park is set to expire in the near future but as yet, he has not come to an agreement with the club over an extension.

And Woods has revealed that she spoke t0 the Magpies boss about his situation, but he remained tight-lipped.

Writing on her personal Twitter account, when asked if there were any hints on him staying, she said: “I tried, but he wasn’t budging”.

OPINION

Benitez’s reluctance to give out any information on his future at St. James’ Park is beginning to wear pretty thin now. Whether it is because he knows nothing himself, or just because he doesn’t want to break ranks with the club’s hierarchy, it’s getting to the stage now that supporters must be pulling their hair out. The fact that the club have allowed things to get to this stage without agreeing a new deal is frankly shambolic, and if Benitez is allowed to walk away, it will be the biggest mistake of Mike Ashley’s controversial tenure. Without Rafa at the wheel, you worry that the Toon Army could derail very quickly next season, and if they were to go down for a third time under Ashley, you fear that it would take an awful lot for them to come back again. Hopefully it won’t come to that, but if it does, it could cause absolute on Tyneside.
