Cal Roberts has posted a message to his Instagram confirming his Newcastle United exit.

The 22-year-old forward has yet to make a senior appearance for the Magpies, but came all the way through the ranks at his boyhood club.

Writing on his personal account, he said: “Would like to thank everyone associated with Newcastle for my time at the club.

“From progressing through every age group to playing and scoring in the first team is things I will never forget. I would also like to thanks the coaching staff and players I have played with for making me the player and person I am today.

“When one door closes another always opens and I’m already looking forward to the future. Again thank you and all the best.”

OPINION

Perhaps not too much of a surprise this one, but a shame nonetheless. Roberts has grown up at Newcastle, and it’s always a shame when a young lad has to leave his boyhood club. You would fancy him to get a break somewhere else, but honestly, it just goes to show how difficult it can be for academy graduates at the very top level. You have to be special to make the step up to first team football, and even those with impeccable natural talent are liable to slip through the cracks. At 22, Roberts is at an age where he has to move on if he has any ambitions in the senior game, and this seems like the right time for him to fly the nest. A move to the lower leagues now seems very likely, but that doesn’t have to be the end of his Premier League ambitions. If he puts in the graft and plays his cards right, he could still end up at the top table one day.
