Talks between Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley and Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan have taken place, but there is still more to be done to secure any deal, according to the Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder.

Newcastle owner Ashley had believed to have agreed a £350million takeover deal with Sheikh Khaled and sent signed contracts to the Premier League, according to The Sun.

However, writing on his personal Twitter account Ryder confirmed that although talks have taken place a deal is still some way off being completed at this stage.

OPINION

It will be very interesting to see what happens as a result of the talks between Ashley and Sheikh Khaled in the coming days and weeks. Newcastle supporters will be hoping that a deal can be completed and can be enthused by the confirmation that the club are at least engaging in talks over a potential deal to being new owners to St James’ Park. However, Newcastle fans will be skeptical after recent takeover talks between Ashley and Peter Kenyon and Amanda Staveley fell through in the last year. That means that many supporters will be awaiting official confirmation before they begin to enjoy the prospect of the club being under owners who would be willing to invest more funds into the first team squad. Benitez’s future could well depend on whether there is a positive outcome from these sale talks, with the Spaniard wanting to be given more funds to improve his squad to take the club to the next level. For now Newcastle supporters can at least live in hope that they might be able to secure a deal for new owners within the next few weeks.
