Fulham manager has admitted that Newcastle United’s first goal against his side on Sunday was “world class”.

The Magpies coasted to a 4-0 rout over the Cottagers in their last game of the season, and it was Jonjo Shelvey who got things started early on with a superb strike.

And Parker was the first to admit that his side were undone by a top quality piece of play.

As quoted in the Chronicle, he said: “I think it was a harsh scoreline, but it is what it is.

“I don’t think it really reflected the game but, on saying that, we got to the final third really well but we lacked a cutting edge about us at times.

“Ultimately they’ve got some good players who obviously hit us on the break, they scored with a world-class strike for the first, and it proved costly.”

OPINION

This was some strike from Shelvey to be fair. The ball comes in from a Matt Ritchie corner and somehow seems to allude everybody until it meets Shelvey deep in the far side of the box. From there, the midfielder takes one touch, sets himself, and unleashes a rasping drive into the top bracket. It was a brilliant piece of skill from a player who has struggled this season, and it will no doubt have given him a real buzz to finally be influencing matches in the manner that we all know he is capable of doing. Shelvey’s future at Newcastle is far from certain, and Rafa Benitez’s decision on whether or not to move him on will not be made on the basis of one great goal, but it was definitely a timely reminder of what the playmaker is abel to do on his day. He will be hoping he gets the opportunity to prove himself next season too.
