Paraguay manager Eduardo Berizzo has delivered a positive injury update on Newcastle United playmaker Miguel Almiron.

The 25-year-old was forced off the field in tears during the Magpies’ Premier League win over Southampton back in April amid fears that he could be ruled out of his country’s Copa America campaign this summer.

He has been named in Paraguay’s provisional 40 man squad for the tournament, however, and Berizzo seems confident of him playing a role for the South Americans.

As quoted in the Chronicle, he said: “With regard to Miguel Almirón, he has gone through all the recovery processes and it has gone very well.

“The report of his club is that he has already been in contact with the ball, he is already doing speed actions and he already supports the training load with no pain.”

OPINION

This will be well-received news on Tyneside. The season may be over, but Almiron has already established himself as a firm favourite at St. James’ Park, and the Geordie faithful will be delighted to hear that he will be able to play a part for his country. You could see during that match against Southampton just how much the Copa America meant to him, and if he is fit and ready that can only be good news. It will mean that he has a much shorter summer break than he would have otherwise, and there is always the risk that he could pick up another knock on international duty, but the flip side of that is that a good tournament could really help him kick on next season for the Magpies. Almiron is still waiting on the elusive first goal in England, but his all-round play has been good, and he will feel that once he gets one, the floodgates will open. A decent showing in the summer could really give his confidence a much needed boost in that regard.
