Newcastle United are interested in signing Benfica winger Rafa Silva, according to the player’s agent.

The 25-year-old winger has been in fine form this season, hitting 19 goals in all competitions, and has accrued 15 caps for the Portuguese national side since 2014.

Speaking to Portuguese station Rádio Renascença, when asked if Newcastle were interested in his client, Silva’s representative Antonio Araujo, said: “They are one of those interested.

“Whatever happens, will happen.”

OPINION

Everything an agent says has to be taken with a pinch of salt. It is obviously beneficial for business if it appears as if his client is in demand. Whether he is brokering a move away, or an extension to a current deal, having a host of teams interested in a player is the best way for a representative to squeeze every last drop out of a club. That being said, it is a bit strange that Newcastle have been picked out of the air like this. It would certainly suggest that there is at least a grain of truth in what Araujo is saying here. If we indulge ourselves and decide to believe, just for a moment, that this is true, then Newcastle could do a whole lot worse. Silva is a fantastic, goalscoring winger with the capability to really trouble defences. He would no doubt be a hit on Tyneside, and wouldn’t necessarily cost the earth. Whether there is any truth in the matter, however, is a different kettle of fish.
