Newcastle United are in the hunt to sign £10million-rated Swansea City winger Daniel James this summer, as Rafa Benitez looks to add more quality to his squad, according to a report from the Chronicle.

The newspaper report that sources close to the Swansea player are suggesting that Newcastle are one of the teams, alongside fellow Premier League side Bournemouth, who are interested in making a move for the 21-year-old.

James has had an excellent campaign in the Championship for Swansea, and was thought to be close to joining Leeds United in the January transfer window, with just a year left on his current contract the Welsh club could be forced to sell him this summer, as they look to re-balance their books following relegation from the Premier League.

OPINION

James would be an excellent signing for Newcastle this summer, if the Magpies are able to secure a move for the 21-year-old. The Swansea winger has established himself amongst the best players and most promising young players outside of the Premier League this campaign, with his impressive displays in the English second tier prompting interest from Leeds in January as the Yorkshire club looked to earn promotion to the Premier League. However, with Leeds missing out on automatic promotion the door could have been opened for other sides to move in and make a bid to sign James. Newcastle will face heavy competition for the 21-year-old who is certain to have lots of suitors after a very productive season with Swansea. He would be just the type of signing Newcastle need to convince Benitez that they do have ambitions to kick on and challenge for the top ten in the Premier League. Were the Magpies to secure a deal for James they would have signed one of the brightest young talents in England at the moment, and have a player with plenty of room for development at St James’ Park.
