Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron has stepped up his recovery from a hamstring injury that has ruled him out the Magpies’ final few matches of the Premier League season, according to a report from the Shields Gazette.

Almiron was signed by Newcastle in the January transfer window from Atalanta United for a club record transfer fee, and the Paraguay international has helped Rafa Benitez’s side pull clear of relegation danger in the second half of the season.

The 25-year-old sustained the hamstring injury during Newcastle’s 3-1 win against Southampton in April, ruling him out for the rest of the season, but has now reportedly seen a specialist in Spain before returning to St James’ Park to step up his recovery, as he aims to feature Paraguay in the 2019 Copa America which gets under way in June.

OPINION

The news about Almiron stepping up his recovery from the hamstring injury, suffered against Southampton, that ended his season prematurely will be a boost to Paraguay hopes of performing well in the Copa America. Benitez, though, will be keeping a watchful eye over Almiron at the Copa America, and hoping that the 25-year-old does not do any more damage whilst representing his country in Brazil. The 25-year-old has already made an impact at Newcastle, with his quality in possession and movement out of possession already causing problems for opposition teams. Almiron’s arrival has also led to an improvement in form of Ayoze Perez, with the forward able to play a more advanced role alongside Salomon Rondon, since the Paraguay international arrived in January. Newcastle supporters will be hoping to see those three linking up with each other again next season, but with Rondon’s future unclear at the moment, they can at least be boosted by Almiron getting nearer to being fully fit. Benitez, if he remains in charge of the club beyond the summer, will be aiming to make Almiron a key figure in his starting line-up next season as he looks to take the club to the next level.
