A host of sides are keen to take Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff on loan next season, according to the Chronicle.

The 19-year-old, brother of breakout star Sean, has enjoyed a fine campaign for the Magpies U23s, and is being targeted by a number of lower league sides as he looks to make the step up to senior football.

Bradford City are named as a potential destination, with manger Gary Bowyer already helping to develop the elder Longstaff brother during their time together at Blackpool.

According to the report, however, the Bantams could face competition from Swindon Town for Longstaff’s services.

OPINION

If Matty Longstaff can show even half the form that his brother has this season, then he will be a real steal for any lower league side. A battling midfielder, the youngster has been standout performer for an impressive Toon reserve team this campaign, and all the signs are that he is ready to make the step up to the senior game. Going out on loan is a wonderful idea, and one that will really help him to learn the ropes. For a player in his role especially, getting to grips with the gritty, dogged side of the game in the lower reaches of the English footballing pyramid can only be a good thing. He is good enough to get plenty of game time in a League Two side, for instance, and the experience that will give him could prove to be invaluable as he looks to follow in his brother’s footsteps.
