Sky Sports reporter Pete Graves has admitted that he is “cautious, but optimistic” about the chances of Newcastle United’s rumoured takeover going through.

A report in the Sun has suggested that a deal could be completed in the near future, but conflicting claims from the Telegraph suggest that the club is not confident of an agreement being reached for a sale.

But writing on his personal Twitter account, Graves remained cautiously hopeful.

He said: “I have remained positive despite all the negativity.

“And although I’ve been let down before… Twice… I believe this is far more developed and likely than previous “bids”.

“Still cautious, but optimistic.”

OPINION

Things are getting into silly territory for Newcastle fans again. We’ve been here before, more than once, and increasingly, there is a sneaking feeling that the momentum is beginning to slow and the wheels are beginning to come off before anything has really gotten off the ground. Whether that is actually the case behind the scenes is impossible to say, of course, but the wild optimism that characterised the hours after this story broke has started to be punctuated by doses of realism. To have somebody like Graves come out and say that they are still optimistic is a bit of a comfort, but you get the impression that even those in the know are relatively in the dark. The chances are this one will rumble on for a while longer yet, and with every minor update, positive or otherwise, you can expect the Geordie faithful he grow more and more fraught.
