With the Premier League season coming to an end, many players will face the reality that they may be moved on come the summer transfer window – including Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey.

Sunday’s game against Fulham could be the last chance that many members of the Magpies squad get to impress before going into the break, although many future plans at Newcastle currently hinder on the ongoing contract saga between Rafael Benitez and the club.

Midfield is an area which certainly needs strengthening with players such as Isaac Hayden and Mo Diame expected to leave in the transfer window. The final game will be an opportunity for many and none need that chance more than former England international Shelvey.

The Chronicle writer Lee Ryder confirmed on his personal Twitter account that Ki Sung-yeung will miss Newcastle’s trip to Fulham on Sunday with a knee injury and that should give Shelvey the perfect opportunity to stake his claim on a place in next seasons squad.

Shelvey has endured a frustrating season under Benitez but was given the captain’s armband in their 1-1 draw away at Brighton in April before subsequently being dropped. The 27-year-old played well in that game in partnership with Hayden and the midfield pair controlled the game until the final 30 minutes.

Benitez has favoured other options such as the injured Sean Longstaff in holding midfield with Shelvey only making 15 appearances under the Spaniard and the injury to Ki should leave Shelvey in a position to stake his claim one last time.

This could well be the final opportunity for Shelvey with the club possibly wanting to take their transfer business a different route after breaking their transfer record in January and if overwhelmed by the situation, Shelvey will have to find a new club come the summer.
