Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has sent a message to Magpies striker Salomon Rondon after he scooped the club’s Player of the Season award.

The 29-year-old picked up the accolade recently after impressing hugely at St James’ Park after arriving on loan from West Bromwich Albion last summer.

Now, Shearer has praised his fellow Newcastle number nine: “You’ve had a very good season big man,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

“Well done,” he finished.

OPINION

Shearer is absolutely spot on in what he says, here. Rondon has had a tremendous season on Tyneside, probably an even better one than manager Rafael Benitez envisioned when he pushed for his arrival last summer. The Spaniard was absolutely adamant that he needed to bring the Venezuelan to St James’ Park and Rondon has proven why that was the case. He’s been superb all season long and is the perfect frontman for the way Benitez has his side playing at the moment. For any Newcastle striker, receiving praise from Shearer is the absolute dream. Everyone knows what Shearer means to the North East and to the Magpies as a club, so Rondon will be aware how big a deal it is to receive praise from him. All Shearer’s praise will do, though, is increase the supporter’s desire to see Rondon back in a black and white shirt next season. And why wouldn’t they want that? Which other Premier League side would potentially let their Player of the Season walk away come the end of the season. Sign him up!
