Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar has put out a call to urge his club to sort out Rafael Benitez’ future so they can push on and grow next season.

The Magpies finished their campaign on a great high on Sunday, thrashing already relegated Fulham 4-0 at Craven Cottage, with the Swiss international scoring their third.

Schar spoke glowingly of the Spaniard when he told the Chronicle: “I want to see how we can improve now and show how good we are now. I think Rafa is doing a good job with these players.”

He went on to add: “We have all gone in the same direction during the season. It is great to work with Rafa as his experience gives us so much all the time.”

Benitez’ current deal expires at the end of June with contract negotiations stalling over his demands. The former Liverpool boss did admit he was to hold a meeting with Mike Ashley in the next week to discuss his future.

OPINION

No one will know more about how the Newcastle squad feels regarding their manager’s future than someone who is a part of it. Schar makes it very clear that the squad enjoy working with Benitez and how much of a good job he has done. It is very clear from the backlash the club continues to receive that all everyone wants involved at the club is Rafael Benitez. He has performed miracles to bring this club back to the top after they seemed so buried when they were relegated upon his arrival. Benitez decided to stick around and eventually led them back to promotion on the first attempt and then survived before pushing the club to mid-table on a relatively small budget. With the meeting to come this week, everyone will be holding their breath and hoping for the best, and that is that their main man at the club gets given what he deserves and finally puts an end to all the torment surrounding his future.
