Rafael Benitez has shortlisted Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez as his dream Newcastle signing should the ongoing takeover be completed according to Don Balon.

The Spanish outlet claims that Sanchez has fallen out of favour with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino who would consider offers of up to £60million for the Colombian enforcer.

It is reported that Benitez sees the 22-year-old international as the perfect player to slot into a back five with Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles, with Florian Lejeune said to have failed to convince the Spaniard as yet.

The 17-cap international has only featured 23 times this season under Pochettino who prefers the more experienced duo of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld. Sanchez would smash the Magpies’ current transfer record of £21.6million that was spent on Miguel Almiron in January.

OPINION

Every manager has a dream list of players they would like to sign but Rafael Benitez must know that nothing is as simple as just signing those players – especially at Newcastle. This link will no doubt set Newcastle fans pulses racing with the possibility of a big name player finally joining and if the takeover is complete there is no reason as to why they wouldn’t not be able to place this sort of bid for Sanchez. The problem will arise when trying to convince the 22-year-old to take the plunge to Newcastle who finished 13th in the Premier League from a Spurs side who have just reached their first ever Champions League final and consistently offer European football. This will remain a dream for quite sometime but the draw of high earnings could always turn a players head should they not be getting the football they want and Benitez could certainly offer Sanchez a chance to become their main man for many years to come.
