Newcastle United striker Salomon Rondon has been included in Premier League legend Alan Shearer’s top flight Team of the Week.

The news was revealed on the Premier League’s official Twitter account on Tuesday, with Rondon receiving deserved recognition for his excellent performance against Liverpool on Saturday.

The 6ft 1in Venezuelan [Source: Transfermarkt] scored a stunning effort to get the Magpies back into the game at St James’ Park, with only Divock Origi’s late winner ensuring the Reds went home victorious.

Rondon is joined in Shearer’s eleven by Trent Alexander-Arnold who starred for Jurgen Klopp’s side on Saturday, while the likes of Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard also earned a place.

OPINION

Rondon deservedly gets a place in Shearer’s line up having produced a wonderful performance against Klopp’s title-chasing side. Reds centre half Virgil van Dijk is undoubtedly the finest defender in world football, but he was given everything he could handle by the Newcastle number nine on Saturday. Shearer will be familiar with giving world class defenders hell, of course, and he would have been smiling in admiration at what Rondon was able to do against Liverpool. Not only was his goal absolutely magnificent, but he made life extremely difficult for the visiting defence from start to finish. His aerial battle with Van Dijk and Fabinho was fascinating to watch, as the Newcastle man gave as good as he got. Back to his goal, though. What a hit that was! He truly gave Alisson – one of the best goalkeepers in the world – no chance whatsoever. For that alone he deserves his spot in Shearer’s eleven.
