The Newcastle United dressing room is optimistic of Rafa Benitez signing a new deal with the club, according to the Chronicle.

A report from the local outlet suggests that the Spaniard spoke with his players last week and told them that he would see them again in July.

He also promised that he would keep in touch with his playing staff over the summer.

Benitez is still yet to agree a new deal with the Magpies on an extension to his current contract, with discussions ongoing.

OPINION

These are promising signs coming out of St. James’ Park. The general impression being given at the moment is that all parties are keen for a deal to be sorted out, and that it is only really a matter of time before some kind of breakthrough is made. Whether that is true or not remains to be seen, of course, but all things considered, the fact that the boss is making these kinds of statements can only be a good omen. Benitez surely wouldn’t be making plans with his players if he had no intentions of being there next season. That doesn’t mean that a deal is sorted, of course, but it at least suggests that there is willing on his part to get something over the line. The sooner that is done, the better for everybody involved with the club, but things are rarely simple for the Toon Army, and until Benitez is pictured holding a scarf aloft in front of the Gallowgate End, there will always be the sneaking suspicion that Mike Ashley could screw things up.
