Ayoze Perez has spoke of his delight after winning Newcastle’s top scorer award for the second season running in the Premier League.

Newcastle finished the Premier League season with a routine 4-0 thrashing of relegated Fulham at Craven Cottage, with Perez scoring his 13th and final goal of the campaign in the process.

This meant that Perez finished with one more goal than the previous season under Rafa Benitez and narrowly beat fellow forward Salomon Rondon to the award.

Perez spoke of his pride afterwards to the Chronicle: “It’s something to be proud of – two years in a row, being the top goalscorer for the club is something that makes me proud of myself.”

The award comes weeks after the Spanish forward was reportedly linked with a move away from the club, with plenty of sides looking into the possibility of securing his signature.

OPINION

It has been another brilliant season for Ayoze Perez and one where he has gained a lot more plaudits for his record and performances. 13 goals is a good feat for a forward who isn’t necessarily the main man when attacking. The vocal point of this Newcastle team is no doubt Salomon Rondon and Perez has formed a great partnership with the big Venezuelan forward. Add Miguel Almiron to make a front three and Newcastle have a great platform to build on should they permanently sign Rondon from West Brom. Unfortunately for the Magpie’s fans, being your clubs top scorer two years in a row will lead to club sniffing around to try and tempt them to move away. Both Arsenal and Inter Milan are both reported to want Perez which will no doubt turn his head, especially with the appeal of European football on the line. Perez did speak glowingly of the club’s fans and if Newcastle have any ambition they need to keep hold of one of their star men.
