Newcastle United legend Steve Harper has taken to social media to congratulate Newcastle United’s U23’s after their tournament victory in the HKFC Soccer Sevens on Sunday.

The U23’s side defeated Rangers Youth Academy 4-3 in the final of the competition to seal their third Main Cup title.

The former Magpies goalkeeper was one of the first to congratulate the side on their success in Hong Kong, and showed his appreciation through a tweet applauding the U23’s.

In a tweet posted from his personal Twitter account, Harper said: “From 0-2 down, brilliant effort lads well done.”

OPINION

Whether it be in the first team or in one of the youth teams, it’s always nice for fans to see their side doing well and bringing silverware back home, whatever the circumstance. The Newcastle U23’s seem to have impressed over in Hong Kong, and are surely now being watched by the eyes of Rafa Benitez, who may be looking to bring some of the younger lads up to the first team ahead of the new season. As the former academy goalkeeping coach at Newcastle, Harper will have had some inside info on the U23’s side which eventually won the competition, and it’s nice to see club legends like him staying well involved with the club which they used to play for. This competition win comes at the perfect time for the U23’s side, with pre-season right around the corner. If the players have been impressing in the Soccer Sevens competition, they may be in with a shout at being called up to the first team in the lead up to the new Premier League season next year.
