Jamaal Lascelles has sympathised with the Newcastle United faithful ahead of what promises to be a period of uncertainty going into the summer transfer window.

Rafa Benitez will be looking to push on into the top half of the table next season if he signs a new contract, after finishing this season in 13th position.

The 25-year old realises that the club won’t be spending as much money in the summer in comparison to other Premier League clubs next season, and knows how frustrating that can be for fans.

“I personally think they’re the best fans in the country… it does get frustrating for them because they see other teams spending hundreds of millions, and they’re not getting that,” said Lascelles to BBC Newcastle, as transcribed by the Chronicle.

“We were in quite a difficult position going in against the big boys right at the start.

“It just goes to show the determination we have to stay calm.”

OPINION

For Newcastle fans around the country, it is becoming more and more frustrating as the transfer window approaches that there may not be too much money to spend on new players in the summer. The club is yet to have even confirmed the future of Benitez, which is also another talking point which needs to be solved ahead of the new season. It’s clear to see that even the players can realise how frustrating the situation is for the Magpies’ fans, but it’s clear to see that the players appreciate the fans’ support no matter the situation. Newcastle may not be the richest of clubs in the Premier League, but if they can keep hold of Benitez and their key players from this season, then they shouldn’t struggle too much going into the new campaign. Although the current situation is not ideal, especially for the Newcastle fans, there isn’t too much that can be done to change things, especially seen as though the future of the manager is still not quite confirmed.
