Newcastle United will make an approach to sign Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham this summer, but will need to wait on the outcome of Aston Villa’s Championship play-off final first, according to the Northern Echo.

The outlet report that if Aston Villa, the club Abraham has spent the season with on loan, have a first refusal option on the England international should they earn promotion, but if Villa lose their play-off final against Derby County then Newcastle will look to take the initiative and make their interest known in the forward to Chelsea’s board.

It is believed that Newcastle’s pursuit of Abraham does not depend on the future of manager Rafa Benitez, with the 21-year-old a long-term feature on the Magpies scouting reports of potential striker targets.

Abraham is set to return to Stamford Bridge following the end of his loan spell at Aston Villa after the Championship play-off final, and it is believed that even though, Maurizio Sarri’s attacking options are limited and the club could potentially be under a transfer embargo, the 21-year-old is still unlikely to feature in the Italian’s long-term plans.

OPINION

Newcastle will be keeping a close watch on the Championship play-off final between Aston Villa and Derby, and will be hoping that Villa do not manage to earn promotion so that they can begin to move for Abraham. The 21-year-old would be just the sort of signing the Magpies should be looking to make, with the striker having the potential to grow and develop, as well as already proving his ability to be a handful in front of goal. Abraham’s form with Aston Villa has been very impressive this campaign, with the Englishman scoring 26 Championship goals, highlighting his ability to be a real threat in and around the penalty area. That is something that Newcastle have lacked at times this season, and now with Salomon Rondon returning to his parent club West Bromwich Albion the Magpies will be even shorter up front, making a move for a player like Abraham an even greater necessity.
