Newcastle United would consider selling midfielder Jonjo Shelvey this summer if the Magpies receive a large offer for the Englishman, according to the Chronicle

The outlet report that West Ham have held a long-term interest in Shelvey and that the Magpies might be willing to consider selling the midfielder who is thought to be on £80,000-a-week making him the club’s highest earner.

Shelvey has seen his impact on Rafa Benitez’s side decline this season, with the midfielder making just 16 Premier League appearances in an injury-hit campaign for the 27-year-old.

West Ham are also believed to be interested in Newcastle’s Isaac Hayden, but it is thought that the Hammers would be unlikely to attempt to sign both of the Magpies’ midfielders during the summer transfer window.

OPINION

It will be very interesting to see if Newcastle do allow Shelvey to leave the club this season, with the midfielder currently the club’s highest earner and having not really made a huge impact on the Magpies season after suffering through injury problems. Were Newcastle to sell Shelvey then it would potentially create an opportunity for Benitez to use his wages to improve his squad for next season, should he remain in charge of the club. At the age of 27 Shelvey should be in his prime and there is no more massive room for him develop further, therefore the club might consider allowing the midfielder to leave so that they can bring in a replacement who is younger and has more potential to develop. However, Newcastle might not be able to afford to lose Shelvey, with Hayden and Mo Diame both likely to leave and Sean Longstaff attracting the interest of Manchester United.
