Newcastle United are weighing up a monster £26.5million bid for CSKA Moscow right back Mario Fernandes, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper claims that the Magpies are considering going in for the Russian international, who scored once and bagged nine assists this season.

Rafael Benitez is looking to add to his numbers on both defensive flanks this summer, with Fernandes a leading candidate to beef up the right back corps.

Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are also thought to be interested in the 28-year-old, but Newcastle are quietly confident that a deal can be done for the player.

OPINION

This would be a perfect signing for Newcastle. The team need to get some greater quality in at right back, where DeAndre Yedlin has gone way downhill and Javier Manquillo is probably more of a squad player. Fernandes would be ideal in that respect. He would come in and would instantly demand a starting spot. He’s a proven player, at domestic and European level, while he performed admirably for the hosts at last summer’s World Cup. Obviously he wouldn’t come cheap and there are doubts over whether owner Mike Ashley would sanction a big money move like this for a 28-year-old right back. However, if Benitez can get a deal over the line, he would be signing a top class player. Atletico are clearly a bit of a roadblock, but if Newcastle are willing to pay the money then they might just be able to get Fernandes in.
