At any Premier League team you want good depth in your squad, but you also don’t want to keep underperforming players around to eat into the wage bill.

That’s the situation that Newcastle United find themselves in with Magpies right back DeAndre Yedlin, who is no longer first choice at his position after suffering a mid-season capitulation this term.

The United States of America international has been at the club since the summer of 2016, but it’s clear that he hasn’t quite developed into the player we all thought he would.

He’s always been decent enough getting forward, but there have been question marks over his defensive ability for some time now. It’s probably that, more than anything, that contributed to him losing his place to Javier Manquillo for the final few months of the campaign.

The former Atletico Madrid man has been in excellent form, but that has left Yedlin on the outside looking in. Now, it’s time to move the 25-year-old on once and for all.

That would allow manager Rafael Benitez to have the funds needed to bring in a replacement, a true first choice right back who could come in and compete with Manquillo.

It’s clear that Yedlin isn’t defensively sound enough for a severe tactician like Benitez. He’s not kicked on and, despite numerous chances, he’s not been able to put together a consistent run of form.

Manquillo, on the other hand, has of late, and it’s left the American on the outside looking in. Newcastle should attempt to offload the former Tottenham Hotspur star this summer while they can still get a decent amount for him.
