Newcastle United have approached Arsenal over the possibility of signing Danny Welbeck, according to Football Insider.

It was confirmed on Sunday, as reported in the Sun, that the striker will leave the Gunners at the end of this season as the club made the decision to not renew his contract.

That will make him available on a free transfer this summer, and it is understood that the Magpies have already made a move to try and snag the 42 cap England international ahead of Premier League rivals Everton and West Ham.

OPINION

Welbeck is a top player who has been unfortunate with injuries in his recent past. If he can get fit and firing again – and there’s nothing to suggest that he won’t – then he could be a real steal. A free swoop for a 42 cap international with a lot of years ahead of him is a fantastic deal, and one that the Magpies should jump on as soon as they possibly can. Given a bit of patience and some belief in his abilities, Welbeck could soar at St. James’. The Magpies will no doubt face some steep competition for his signature, and there is an argument to be made that they would be the least ambitious club interested in his signature, but the allure of playing at St. James’ Park in front of that crowd, with a world class manager like Benitez at the helm, could prove to be too much to resist.
