Newcastle United have made enquires about Nuremberg defensive midfielder Patrick Erras, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper claims that the Magpies are one of the sides taking a look at the 24-year-old, who starred for his side over the final few months of the Bundesliga season.

It is thought that the German could be available for as little as £5million this summer, with the player possessing a desire to test himself in England.

OPINION

This is an interesting potential move, because Newcastle will undoubtedly require some central midfield help come next season. Sean Longstaff and Ki Sung-yueng appear set to stick around, but there is uncertainty over the futures of Jonjo Shelvey, Mohamed Diame and Isaac Hayden. If all three of those leave, or even just two of them, then Rafael Benitez will almost certainly dip into the transfer market for a central midfielder this summer. Considering that two of those players are more defensive-minded midfielders (Diame and Hayden), it would make sense for the Magpies to target Erras come the end of the season. However, he’s a relatively unproven prospect, who only really made the breakthrough with Nuremberg in the final three months of the season. Before that he was a bit-part player at best. So is he the right man to reinforce the Newcastle midfield? Possibly, but it seems like an awful risk when there are surely more proven candidates around.
