Newcastle United’s supporters have been here before with takeover rumours, earlier this campaign in fact. Oh, and last season, too.

Still, as long as owner Mike Ashley is in charge of the club, they will never stop hoping that someone swoops in and buys the Magpies from him.

They were given a bit of hope on that score once again on Wednesday, when The Chronicle confirmed that Mexican company Orlegi Sports are investigating the possibility of buying Newcastle.

The club has been officially up for sale for two years, of course, but nothing has truly materialised. That’s the reason supporters have become so jaded by this whole thing.

However, The Chronicle’s report includes details that suggest Orelgi Sports’s interest might be genuine. They already own two football clubs and are now looking to add a European outfit to their portfolio, while they are exploring the United Kingdom to potentially find said European team.

Now that Premier League status has been secured for another year it’s natural for more takeover talk to arise. However, The Chronicle, a reliable source, have managed to confirm that Orlegi Sports are at least considering a move to purchase the Magpies.

The club’s supporters will surely have everything crossed, then, that the Mexican outfit act on their interest in the club and make an official bid for them. If they can match Ashley’s valuation then there’s no reason why a deal couldn’t be done.

Obviously the Newcastle fans will remain doubtful until there’s an official agreement in place for Ashley to be ousted for good. However, this is an encouraging step in that direction at least.
